The Dispatcher is primarily responsible for designing safe and effective bus routes and schedules. The position helps to develop and maintain schedules for field/sports trips while coordinating and assigning drivers and buses. Responsibilities include communicating with staff, school administration, and occasionally parents regarding transportation routing and student conduct. This role is Full-Time / Part-Time Non-Exempt and reports to the General Manager / Terminal Manager. This position may include, but not be limited to the following performance responsibilities, qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities. Essential Duties: Help plan, schedule, and assign drivers and/or monitors for transportation vehicle operations. Design routes and stops using routing software. Keep all drivers updated on all changes in routes and bus stops. Dispatch all regularly scheduled vehicles, trips and extra assignments. Assure all route assignments are implemented as scheduled. Arrange for substitutes when needed. Schedule vehicles as needed, input miles and hours for bus trips. Prepare all trip sheets, maps and other vital driver information related to extra trips. Prepare and distribute master schedules, maps, student ridership lists, and other items as requested. Communicate clearly and effectively while giving instructions, using a two-way radio, telephone, or a computer. Other Duties: Drive school buses when needed Update transportation databases & keep clear and accurate records Input transportation requests and schedule/assign the appropriate vehicle Take driver calls and messages Instruct drivers in schedule and/or route changes Perform other related duties as assigned by management Job Requirements: Minimum Requirements: Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver s License Class B with proper endorsements. Knowledge and experience working with computers and programs. Ability to route and schedule buses effectively. Preferred Qualifications High School dipolma or equivalent GED Demonstrated ability to prioritize work on multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively and calmly under rapidly changing, demanding and high stress circumstances. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone or over radio. Work independently with minimal supervision and make judgments in accordance with company procedures and policies. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job: Employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time; use hands and fingers to handle, control or feel; use foot controls to drive; reach with hands and arms; climb and descend stairs with a maximum height of 17 1/2 inches; bend, stoop, and kneel; and talk or hear. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of office equipment. Twisting, stooping and crouching occasionally while sitting at a desk to access documents and equipment. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Employee may be exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus. The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures. This includes the pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds, operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly in an emergency situation, carry or drag a person up to 125 pounds 30 feet in 30 seconds or less, exit from an emergency door opening of 24 by 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in 10 seconds.
